Ganesh Utsav has a historical significance in Indian Freedom struggle and Dhol Tasha has been an inseparable part of it. Every year, when Ganpati Bappa graces our homes and lives, the exuberant beats of Dhol Tasha, playing in some far corner of the city liven up the festivities.

Dhol Tasha, unlike the popular culture, started as a mark of humble protest, which was appreciated, loved and taken up as a cultural heirloom for years to come. What began as a mode of voicing opinions, soon turned into a beacon of hope, love, devotion, and spirituality.

‘Gajar’ is a result of our curiosity towards this art, towards knowing its origins and understanding the cultural significance it carries and how its commercial transformation has affected the traditional art. This documentary traces the history of Dhol Tasha, through the experiences of some significant people, who stand testimony to this journey over the years.

Rambhau Dimble, Senior Dhol Tasha Player and member of the 1st Dhol Tasha Pathak, Rajan Ghanekar, senior most Tasha player and Stalwart in the original style of Tasha, Shirish Thithe – Former Dhol Tasha exponent and founding member of Shivagarjana, one of the most renowned Dhol Tasha Pathaks in Pune and Soham Mahajani – Core member of Gajalakshmi Dhol Pathak have contributed immensely to the art and to the story of this documentary.

This documentary is a visual representation of our passion for the art of Dhol Tasha. The documentary is an ode to its founders and the players who have brought it this far.

We hope you like it.

Till then… गणपती बाप्पा मोरया!
